Minneapolis Muslim Community Looks to Ramadan for Renewal and Recovery

As the federal surge in Minnesota winds down, Minneapolis’ Muslim community is cautiously optimistic that Ramadan will help restore both spirit and morale. Hundreds gathered for the annual iftar at Karmel Mall, a cultural and economic hub for the city’s Somali population. For many, the feast is more than a meal; it’s a chance to reconnect and rebuild after months of fear and disruption.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, involves fasting from dawn to sunset and serves as a time for prayer, reflection, and community support. Yet, the recent Operation Metro Surge, launched in December to apprehend undocumented immigrants, left many Muslims wary of congregating. At its peak, 3,000 federal officers carried out arrests, while aggressive tactics and the deaths of two U.S. citizens left deep scars in immigrant communities.

“Forty percent of our sales were impacted,” said Mohamed Hagi, co-owner of Qamaria coffee shops, which serve as community gathering spots. Karmel Mall also lost more than $400,000 in rental revenue as patrons stayed away. Even mosques reported smaller congregations due to fears of federal harassment.

Now that the operation has ended, faith leaders see Ramadan as an opportunity to heal. “This is the time when we need to lean into our faith more,” said Khalid Omar of Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center. Community efforts include extended Ramadan hours at local businesses, iftars with open discussion, and interfaith initiatives that show solidarity. Plans also involve security measures and coordination with police to ensure worshipers’ safety.

Despite past hardships, organizers remain hopeful that Ramadan will rekindle community life and encourage residents to return to mosques, shops, and shared spaces. For many, the month represents a chance to reclaim a sense of normalcy, restore economic stability, and pray for those still in detention.
