Helping Hand for Relief and Development celebrated the opening of its multi-million-dollar Institute of Neurological Disease and Rehabilitation by giving away hundreds of wheelchairs and other assistive devices.

Types of Wheelchairs Distributed
Most beneficiaries receive manual wheelchairs. Those with more severe disabilities may qualify for electric wheelchairs, with priority given to students attending school, college, or university, as well as working family members who need mobility support to earn a living and provide for their families.
Other options include:
- Electric wheelchairs: Battery-powered wheelchairs that help people with limited strength or severe disabilities move independently using controls, often a joystick.
- Customized wheelchairs: Wheelchairs specially adjusted to fit a person’s body, disability, posture, comfort, and daily mobility needs.
- Tricycles: Three-wheeled mobility devices that help people with disabilities travel longer distances more safely and independently than walking.
The distribution event took place at the new hospital: Karachi Institute of Neurological Disease and Rehabilitation.
HHRD Institute of Neurological Diseases
Seven million Pakistanis (the majority being children), live with disabilities, 70% of districts have no rehabilitation services at all, and until KIND-R opened, not a single comprehensive neuro-rehab hospital existed in the entire country.
Established by HHRD, the Karachi Institute of Neurological Diseases & Rehabilitation (KIND-R) is the largest comprehensive development of its kind in Pakistan with a long-term vision, bringing together diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation state-of-the-art facilities and services under one roof, at no cost to patients during its inception since start of this year, 2026.
Medical Equipment Distribution
In addition to wheelchairs, HHRD staff and volunteers distributed other assistive devices including:
- Medical beds: Adjustable beds that support safer rest, caregiving, and positioning for people with limited mobility, paralysis, neurological conditions, or long-term disabilities.
- Hearing aids: Small assistive devices that improve hearing, helping people communicate, participate in family life, and navigate daily interactions more confidently.
- Walkers: Mobility aids that provide balance and support for people recovering from injury, stroke, weakness, or disability-related walking challenges.
- Laptops: Assistive communication tools that help people with disabilities connect with family, access information, express needs, and participate in community life.
- Prosthetics: Artificial limbs that help people who have lost arms or legs regain movement, independence, dignity, and everyday functional ability.
- Orthotics: Braces or supports that improve alignment, stability, posture, and movement for people with physical disabilities or neurological conditions.
HHRD Partners with the Government of Sindh
The KIND-R hospital is the largest comprehensive neurological disease and rehabilitation hospital in Pakistan, and the government is taking notice! HHRD was pleased to welcome the following partners on this important project:
- Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities DEPD Government of Sindh
- Sindh PWD Protection Authority
- Climate and Disaster Justice Unit
- Representatives from various organizations, social workers, parents, and children.
Representatives from each of these organizations took part in the distribution, handing out assistive technology to the community. Speaking on the occasion, the dignitaries reaffirmed their commitment to the rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with disabilities, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities in education, employment, health, and social participation.
HHRD reiterated its unwavering commitment to continue its efforts, in partnership with the Government of Sindh and other stakeholders, for the rights, rehabilitation, and dignified inclusion of persons with disabilities, recognizing them as a valuable asset to our society and essential contributors to building a just, inclusive, and equitable society.
A total of 475 assistive devices were distributed with the blessing of Allah SWT.
