Zakat al-fitr is a special form of charity in Islam, a mandatory alms paid by all Muslims at the end of each Ramadan. It differs from zakat al-mal. Which is only obligatory on sane adults with a wealth threshold and can be given at any time throughout the year. Zakat al-fitr is not limited by age or wealth level but is restricted by time. Muslims are encouraged to give their zakat al-mal during Ramadan if possible. Zakat Foundation of America explains it best!

Zakat al-fitr is distributed to the poor on the morning of Eid al-Adha. All to include the impoverished in the Muslim community’s celebration after fasting its holiest month. For those giving zakat al-fitr, it serves as a means to “seal” their Ramadan deeds with charity. To cleanse impurities, and keep the poor at the forefront of their consciousness during a time of great celebration. Zakat al-fitr is a beautiful way for Muslims of all socioeconomic backgrounds to connect and celebrate Eid together, providing support for the downtrodden for years to come.
